Doxycycline
Introduction
Doxycycline is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of infections in dogs and cats, including those caused by ticks. It is typically administered twice a day and should always be given with food to prevent gastrointestinal upset.

Missed doses and Changing medications
If you miss a dose of Doxycycline, administer it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule at the next dose time.
Monitoring and Lab work
In some instances, the medical team may recommend we recheck labwork like a white blood cell count, tick panel, or culture before discontinuing this medication. Please contact the medical team if you have questions.
Special precautions
This medication should always be given with food. In cats, it is recommended to give 5ml of water by syringe after each dose.
Potential Side effects
Doxycycline is generally well tolerated by both dogs and cats. However, the following side effects have been reported:
Gastrointestinal Upset: Vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite are the most common side effects.
Liver Enzymes: There may be an increase in liver enzyme values, although these elevations are typically not clinically significant.
Allergic Reactions: Allergic and skin reactions are possible but rare.
Esophageal Strictures: Particularly if the medication is given without adequate food or water.
