Metronidazole
Introduction
Metronidazole is an antibiotic that treats a variety of infections, including bacterial, giardia, and protozoal infections. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent in the gastrointestinal tract and is commonly used to treat some forms of diarrhea. Metronidazole should be administered twice a day, always with food, to ensure optimal absorption and minimize gastrointestinal upset.

Missed doses and Changing medications
If you miss a dose of Metronidazole, administer it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next dose. In that scenario, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule with the next dose.
Monitoring and Lab work
Occasionally, the medical team may recommend rechecking lab work, such as a white blood cell count, tick panel, or culture, before discontinuing this medication. Please consult with your veterinary team if you have any questions or concerns.
Potential Side effects
While Metronidazole is effective, it can cause side effects, particularly in dogs on high doses or long-term therapy:
Neurological Signs: These can include sudden and severe symptoms such as an inability to walk, dizziness, head tilt, rapid eye movements, and rarely, seizures. These signs are generally reversible, but immediate veterinary attention is necessary.
Taste Sensitivity: Metronidazole has a sharp metallic taste, which some animals may find objectionable. If administering this medication is challenging, consult your veterinarian for alternative formulations or compounded products.
Other Uncommon Side Effects: These may include low white blood cell counts, blood in the urine, liver toxicity, and gastrointestinal problems.
