Omeprazole (prilosec®)
Introduction
Omeprazole is an antacid medication primarily used to treat gastric ulcers. It is also given alongside corticosteroids such as prednisone to prevent steroid-induced ulcers. Additionally, Omeprazole can reduce intracranial pressure, making it a useful component in treating conditions like hydrocephalus. The medication is typically administered once or twice a day and can be taken with or without food.
Omeprazole is available over the counter at most drugstores in 20mg capsules. Higher or different dosages may be available by prescription.
